Ah, the perfect engagement ring! Here are a few tips when looking for and purchasing that once in a lifetime piece.

Budget, budget, budget! There are lots of options out there. Knowing what you’re able to spend will narrow the selection for you, and keep you focused on what’s actually possible.

What type? The convention is diamond, but that’s certainly not the only option! What type of stone are you looking for? If you’re looking at diamonds? Is there a particular color? Classic clear, yellow, pink? Perhaps a stunning sapphire? Modern brides are really breaking out of the convention box.

Learn the 4 C’s – Understanding what you’re looking for will show your salesperson that you’re serious, and they’ll work that much harder to help you find that perfect ring!

Keep the wedding bands in mind! Do you want the wedding bands to coordinate? You also want them to coordinate with the engagement ring itself – so that’s something you’ll want to keep in mind while you’re shopping.

Who are YOU? Or for the guys, know your fiancé! Is she a bit more conservative? A traditionally styled ring may work better. Is she modern? Maybe choose something with clean lines or out-of-the-box styling. Take notice of what her current jewelry looks like – what types of stones? Note the style. Does she wear more gold, or more silver/platinum? Is she really active? A super tall, heavily pronged setting may get in the way of her activities. Keep these in mind while you’re on the hunt!

Don’t forget to get it appraised by a certified jewelry appraiser – you want to make sure you’re getting what you’re paying for, and what you’re paying is in line with the product you’re receiving.
